A dial no one else owns

Warren selected the timber himself, piece by piece, from boat hulls. The grain, the knots, the variations in tone never repeat. No dial looks like another.

The watch you receive contains a fragment of a Tasmanian boat hull, timber that has spent years on the water. Not "inspired by". The real thing.

"My buyers don't all know boats, but they all recognise timber that has worked. They feel the dial is real, that it has lived before the watch."

A bracelet you feel from the very first moment

The better Huon pine offcuts never went on the fire. Warren kept them, sorted them by species and thickness. The shaped wooden links last. They resist moisture. They darken slightly with the years, the way the timber on a well-kept old boat does.

Unlike a strap in silicone or stamped metal, a Kirby bracelet ages with you. Worn, it only gets better. Those who have received their watch have been wearing it daily since day one.

"The sea doesn't ruin a good boat over time. I hope it'll be the same for your watch."

A blue no factory can reproduce

The seconds hand is blued. By thermal oxidation. An old technique, the same one used for two centuries on marine navigation instruments. The colour is in the metal, not on the metal. It doesn't flake.

The bluing holds for decades of life on the water. The tone stays firm, transparent, deep. Plenty of watches sell for ten times the price without reaching this finish.

"It's the exact blue of the Southern Ocean on a clear day. I've been looking at it from my workshop every morning for forty-three years."

The man behind the watch

Warren Kirby, 71 years old, 1 boatshed, 43 years

You already know the story. What you may not know: he worked alone, no help, for two years. No factory. No sub-contracting. Just his own hands. 240 watches, no more.

When these watches are gone, it really is over. The lease on the shed runs out on 30 June. The bench he built himself thirty years ago will come apart. Last chance.

People who have received their watch

Margaret L., 67, Hobart ★★★★★

"I gave it to my husband for our fortieth wedding anniversary. He's a man of few words. Over dinner, he told me he didn't know a watch could feel so heartfelt."

Catherine D., 61, Fremantle ★★★★★

"Mine has a black grain running diagonally across the dial. It's the only one in the world. Even more beautiful than in the photos. Really more beautiful."

Arnold B., head chef, Melbourne ★★★★★

"I ordered three, one for me, two for my sons. $240 altogether. I showed mine to a watchmaker mate. He asked how much it cost. When I told him $79, he didn't believe me."

Philip D., 65, Launceston ★★★★★

"My wife asked me to order the same one for her father. I did. She's delighted. She says she's got the best birthday gift for him this year."
